1) Ambitious scientific objectives

  • Visualize the human brain at a spatial resolution never reached before: « mesoscopic scale » (~100 microns).
  • Discover new contrasts.
  • Explore the potential of molecular imaging at very high sensitivity.

2) Unique characteristics

  • Magnet operating in non-persisting mode for a better temporal stability,
  • Main coil composed of individual coils using a « double pancake » design for a better spatial homogeneity,
  • Two active shielding coils,
  • Magnetic field: 11.75 T,
  • Stored energy: 338 MJ,
  • Current: 1483 A,
  • Inductance: 308 H,
  • Cryostat length: 5 m,
  • External diameter: 5.2 m,
  • Internal diameter of the magnet tunnel: 90 cm,
  • Weight: 132 tons.
First magnet in the world with these magnetic field, internal diameter and technology!

3) Multiple technical challenges

Machine performing the winding of the « double pancake » coils.  All the « double pancake » coils have been wound individually (one side and then the other side). Autumn 2013.
« Double pancake » coil on a test platform.  Autumn 2013.
Storage of the « double pancakes ». Individual characteristics (Autumn 2013):
- External diameter: 1,9
- Internal diameter: 1 m
- Number of conductor turns per pancake: 88.
